Healing through nature and plant products has been practiced for centuries. So, it’s safe to say that we have known for a while now that plant ingredients can work wonders for our health and beauty–minus any harmful side effects.

That is why our ancient herbal healing system of Ayurveda is still flourishing. Ayurvedic texts contain details of a staggering number of plant products, along with their medicinal properties and specific combinations. One such example is that of triphala, which contains three herbs.

What exactly is triphala?
Triphala is a combination of amla, haritaki, and vibhitika.

Haritaki is a small green fruit used to treat several conditions. It is said to contain
antioxidants, which help in delaying degeneration. In fact, it can delay the visible signs of ageing, like lines and wrinkles.

Vibhitika, also a fruit, is said to have antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is also an anti-inflammatory that strengthens the hair roots.

Amla is revered for its high vitamin C content, along with its heat-resisting properties. It is also said to strengthen the immune system.

Due to its high content of vitamin C, antioxidants, and other compounds–triphala plays a protective role and is very useful in preventing many skin and hair conditions.

What can triphala do for you?
Triphala works as a powerful tonic for the hair, stimulating the follicles and roots and encourages hair growth. Amla in triphala also restores the normal pH balance of the scalp and makes the hair healthy.

Triphala-based hair tonics also help to remove dandruff and treat related conditions. This is because vibhitika in triphala has antibacterial and antifungal properties.

You can also control hair loss with a triphala hair tonic by applying it daily at night on the scalp using cotton wool. Leave it overnight and rinse your hair with water the next morning. You can also opt for non-oily triphala tonics that don’t need to be shampooed.
