College farewells are difficult—not just because it’s time to bid goodbye to the happy undergrad years, but also because you’ve got to look your absolute best.

Unfortunately, the struggle doesn’t end at searching for a beautiful sari, it extends to getting flawless skin, glowing even from beneath all the makeup. All this, especially if you’re looking forward to that cute guy finally asking you out on the last day of college.

My mommy understood, so when my farewell month kicked in, she innocently suggested that I start washing my face with honey instead of a face wash.

Seriously hoping that my mom will never read this, I will go on to admit that I wouldn’t have taken her advice seriously if it wasn’t for the lack of funds (thanks to the investment in a sari, way out of my league) for fancy facial clean-ups at a salon.

And so my honey-cleansing regime began

Since beggars can’t be choosers, I started washing my face with organic honey from the fridge. I began each morning by splashing water on my face and apply about a teaspoon of honey.

With no expectations of any results whatsoever, I would go on to massage the honey onto my skin for a few seconds, lick some off my upper lip, get scolded by my prying mother standing by the bathroom door, and finally rinsing the sticky “cleanser” with water.

Fortunately, both honey and I passed with flying colours

Perhaps, I was too busy during the course of this natural treatment to notice how washing my face with honey gave me an instant glow. I’d be lying if I said that the glow lasted all day. But, I’d also be lying if I said my skin didn’t become healthier, supple, and less prone to acne.

In fact, within 15 days, the hydrating effects of honey had started showing on my face and by the thirtieth day of the farewell, I could actually give a complex to models in beauty ads.

Sorry for underestimating you mom, because your remedy is backed by science too

Still hoping she doesn’t read this, I am simply going to apologise for taking mom’s honey face wash remedy so lightly. She obviously has more sense than I possibly ever can.

In fact, blame it on my lack of interest in history as I was completely unaware of how the Persians, the Egyptians, the Malaysians, and even the Aussies counted on the wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and glow-boosting powers of honey for years.

Even a study published in the Central Asian Journal of Global Health talks about the therapeutic effects of honey and goes on to explain how the enzymes present in honey can help open the pores of your skin and unclog them to give you a natural glow.

That’s not it! The sweet nectar can even reduce redness and inflammation due to acne, as per a study published in BMJ Open in 2015. And we’ve got honey’s anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties to thank for that.

Not to mention, another study conducted in 2016 proves that the water-retaining powers of the sugars present in honey and its protein and amino acid content can collectively work to repair the skin and keep it hydrated.

Now, need I remind you of how hydrated, supple, and acne-free skin glows automatically? On second thoughts, you can see my farewell pictures if you need more proof.
