Hemp seed oil is often confused with CBD oil or cannabidiol. Both oils are derived from the cannabis plant, but while CBD oil is derived from the flowers, leaves, and stems of the cannabis plant, hemp seed oil is derived from the seeds of the cannabis plant (marijuana). To break down the numerous health benefits of hemp seed oil in Ayurveda for overall health, skin, and hair, Health Shots got in touch with Ayurveda expert Dr Chaitali Deshmukh.
In Ayurveda, hemp has a long tradition of use in both religion and medicine. It is mentioned in early Ayurveda texts such as Charaka, Sushruta, and Shargandhara Samhitas. It is one of the five sacred herbs in the Vedas and has been used in ancient India since about 2000 BCE. The Ananda Kanda devotes an entire chapter to hemp, including information on its toxicity, cultivation, preparation, and use.
Most people might be surprised to learn that hemp seeds have long been employed in Ayurveda. Dr Deshmukh says, “The seeds are a fantastic source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are excellent for your heart, as well as rich in proteins, which revitalize the body and encourage growth, and fibre (aids in digestion). Hemp seeds are tamasic in nature, which means they have a powerful and anchoring effect on the body.”
Hemp oil has a long list of advantages for your mane. Hemp seeds are cold-pressed to produce an unprocessed oil. A clear, light green, nutty oil with numerous health advantages is produced after it is refined. The oil is used for hair growth. Along with the proteins and vitamins in the oil, fatty acids aid in the promotion of new hair growth.
Your attention must have been drawn to the skin benefits of hemp seed oil. According to Dr Deshmukh, “Hemp seed oil works wonders when it comes to the skin, (including the scalp). It is because this oil hydrates the skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and treats acne.”
Moreover, this unique oil effectively treats dry, sensitive, rosacea-prone, and acneic skin! Hemp oil nourishes, softens, and moisturizes the skin, adapting to its needs and promoting healthy cell turnover. It has a perfect 3:1 omega-6: omega 3 ratio and is high in GLA (Gamma-linolenic acid), all essential amino acids, and phytonutrients.
“Hemp is a well-known super oil that can treat acne, ease rosacea, and reduce redness. It also calms excessive dryness and heat that are brought on by Vata and Pitta Dosha imbalances,” adds Dr Deshmukh.
The seeds’ anti-inflammatory effects can also aid in the treatment of eczema and the reduction of acne.
