We know how bizarre this hack sounds, right? Washing your face with salt water is unheard of, but you will be shocked to know that this simple trick works wonders for your skin. It can rejuvenate and repair the appearance of your skin, hair, and nails.

Here are some of the most important benefits of washing your face with salt water:

1. Eliminates acne

Salt water naturally absorbs bacteria in the skin. It also tightens the skin to reduce pores, and sucks pore-clogging oil and toxins out of the skin. Eventually, this action helps to reduce breakouts and you get clear and glowing skin.

2. Treats skin conditions

Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and even excessive dryness, are uncomfortable, unattractive, and potentially painful. Regularly washing your skin with salt water can get rid of these skin conditions, leaving your skin feeling silky soft and smooth. Sea salt includes vital healing minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It also sucks toxins out of the skin to eliminate a myriad skin conditions in an effortless manner.

3. Acts as a facial toner

Salt water acts as a facial toner, and is often used to shrink the pores, remove oil from the skin, making your skin feel smooth and refreshed. Every time you wash your face and before you apply your daily makeup, spritz your face with a salt water mix to keep your skin oil-free all day long.

4. It’s a great exfoliant

Salt is an excellent natural exfoliant. It sloughs off dead skin cells, rejuvenates, brightens, tightens, and softens the skin for an overall smooth skin tone.

5. It works as a rejuvenating Scrub

If you don’t have sensitive skin, then you can incorporate sea salt into your skincare routine. One of the benefits of salt water for skin is that it aids in skin cell turnover, and makes your skin softer and smoother.

6. It detoxes the skin

Since it is great at absorption, salt acts as a natural detoxifier. It sucks out the harmful toxins and bacteria absorbed by the skin, giving you young and glowing skin.

7. Used in facial masks

It not only removes excess oil from the skin, but also hydrates and nourishes the skin. Using salt in facial masks helps to balance oil production and moisture in the skin.

Here’s how you can make this salt water solution

“To make a salt water solution, take four cups of distilled or boiled (for at least 20 minutes) water with two teaspoons of non-iodized salt, an airtight storage container with a lid, such as a bottle and a mixing utensil. To make a small batch of the solution, you can use one cup of water with a half teaspoon of salt. First, wash your hands thoroughly and sterilize the container and mixing utensil, by using a dishwasher or boiling them in water.  Then, pour the water into the container, mix in the salt and stir until completely dissolved. Let the mixture cool down, before use,” advises Dr Nivedita Dadu, a celebrity dermatologist and founder and chairman of Dadu Medical Centre.

Here are four ways to use salt water for skin
  • As a facial toner

Salt helps to cleanse pores deeply, balances oil production and thwarts bacteria that can instigate breakouts and acne. Mix one teaspoon of sea salt with four cups of warm water in a small spray bottle, until the salt has completely dissolved. Use this natural mist on clean, dry skin, avoiding your eyes. Use twice daily.
  • As a body scrub

To make a natural body scrub, mix a quarter-cup salt and half a cup olive oil or softened coconut oil into a thick paste. You can also add 10 drops of any essential oil. Apply in the shower with a washcloth, loofah, or the palms of your hands, gently scrubbing your skin in circular motions.
  • As a relaxing salt bath

Salt absorbs dirt, grime, and toxins, and cleanses the skin’s pores deeply. Salt’s mineral content helps to restore the protective barrier of your skin, and keeps your skin hydrated. To use it as a salt bath, add one third cup salt to a tub filled with warm water, and swish to dissolve the salt. Soak for 15 to 30 minutes.

  • As a balancing mask

To use salt water in a balancing mask, mix two teaspoons of sea salt (preferably finely ground) with four teaspoons of raw honey to create a smooth paste. Apply evenly to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Let it stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Before rinsing, soak a washcloth in warm water, and gently wring it out. Lay the warm washcloth on your face for 30 seconds. Use your fingers to gently exfoliate in circular motion, while rinsing your skin thoroughly with tepid water.

So ladies, ditch those fancy-schmancy creams and start to use salt water. Your skin will thank you!
