Most people either start their day with a cup of tea or coffee. Those who have fitness goals, prefer green tea over other varieties like masala tea and black tea. Coffee also has a green variety which is rich in chlorogenic acid, a compound that is believed to have various health benefits, including weight loss. Green coffee beans are basically in their natural, unprocessed state. That way, it is similar to green tea, which is one of the least processed types of tea. Also, if we talk about weight loss, we can’t skip green tea, as it is a popular drink among those who watch their weight. But if given a choice, should you drink green tea or green coffee for weight loss?
Green coffee refers to coffee made from raw, unroasted coffee beans. Unlike traditional coffee beans that are roasted to get their rich brown colour and robust flavour, green coffee beans are in their natural, unprocessed state, says dietitian Ramya B. It contains caffeine, but often less than roasted coffee. The exact amount can vary based on the bean and preparation method. Green coffee is often consumed as a beverage similar to regular coffee, but sometimes it is used in supplement form for its potential health benefits.
Green tea is made from Camellia sinensis plant’s leaves, which undergo minimal oxidation during processing. It is one of the least processed types of tea, which helps retain its green colour and high levels of antioxidants, says the expert. Green tea is high in catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which are powerful antioxidants that help neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.
Apart from the similarity in their colour, there are certain features that distinguish green tea from green coffee.
1. Flavour
Green coffee has a mild taste, and it is less bitter compared to roasted coffee. Green tea has a vegetal flavour – savoury and fruity at the same time – with grassy notes. It can be a little sweet or slightly bitter, depending on the way you prepare it.
Made from raw, unroasted coffee beans, green coffee are harvested then processed to remove the outer fruit layer. Then they are dried, and ground or used whole. It is brewed similar to roasted coffee. Green tea is made from unoxidized tea leaves, which are steamed or pan-fried to prevent oxidation, preserving their green colour and nutrients. The leaves are typically steeped in hot water to extract the flavour and beneficial compounds.
Green coffee may help lower blood pressure, particularly in people with mild hypertension, says Ramya. The chlorogenic acid in this beverage is thought to contribute to this effect by improving blood vessel function. It contains caffeine, which can improve cognitive function and alertness. Green tea is rich in catechins with broad antioxidant effects, contributing to overall health. There are multiple health benefits of green tea. One of the more important ones is that it may improve cholesterol levels and support cardiovascular health due to the presence of antioxidants, says the expert.
A 2011 study published in the Gastroenterology Research and Practice journal indicated that having green coffee could lead to weight loss. Similarly, a 2008 study published in the Physiology & Behavior journal showed that participants who took green tea extract lost 3.3 kg in three months.
So which beverage is better for weight loss?
Green coffee beans are rich in chlorogenic acid, which is believed to help reduce the absorption of carbohydrates from the digestive tract, leading to lower blood sugar and blocking fat buildup. This can help reduce fat accumulation and support weight loss, says Ramya. On the other hand, green tea can increase metabolic rate and enhance fat burning, which can aid in weight loss. But just having green tea or green coffee cannot be used as a strategy for weight loss. You need to eat a balanced diet and workout as well.

It may cause jitteriness, digestive issues, and restlessness due to caffeine. Excessive consumption might lead to increased heart rate and anxiety, says the expert. You can take one or two cups of green coffee per day to avoid the side effects.
It may cause stomach upset, insomnia, or headaches due to caffeine. Since it contains tannins, it can reduce iron absorption. Two or three cups of green tea per day is typically safe.
Green coffee and green tea are two different beverages that can be part of your diet. They can help with weight management, but don’t solely rely on them for weight loss.
