This pandemic isn’t easy on anyone, and it keeps getting harder and harder with each passing day. And the result? Every age-group is equally susceptible to mental health issues. It all began with homeschooling, and then working from home, and now there’s so much financial uncertainty that has really taken a toll on us.
While it is important for you to cope with this situation, it is equally important to make your kids feel safe, healthy, and manage their emotions in a better way. Here are a few parenting tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) to get through the stress of the pandemic.
We live in very uncertain times, and it’s absolutely normal to be fearful. You are your children’s safe place, so make sure you are as comforting as you can be. Hug and kiss them more. Address their fears, talk to them about how they are feeling, and then reassure them that everything will be fine soon. Answer their questions in a calm and simple way to humour their curiosity. All in all, make sure they do not panic and stay calm.
Having a routine, and that too for children, has become even more important during this pandemic. Maintaining a healthy routine with proper bedtime will inculcate a sense of order, and will add some normalcy to their life. Make them do everything that they used to do. It will make a huge difference!

Your children need your appreciation, so celebrating their smallest of achievements will fill them with confidence and happiness, which is generally lacking during this time. Moreover, you can reward them by offering to watch a movie or cartoon together.
While having a restrictive screen time is healthy, don’t feel guilty about relaxing the screen time. Since they are not going out, give them that time to watch a movie or play a video game. However, don’t give them a completely free hand, you still have to monitor the type of content they are consuming and also, the time they spend on their screens.
Since your children are unable to go out during the pandemic, help them stay connected to their friends and classmates through video conferencing or setting up a multiplayer game. In this way, they will be less cranky and will be able to maintain a healthy mental space.
So ladies, follow these simple and effective parenting tips, and see a difference in your child’s behaviour.
