Interpersonal relationships are one of the most important parts of the human experience. The right relationships have the potential to empower us. When we have respect for ourselves, we can also teach our partners how to respect us. The best way to gain respect in a relationship is by being a good listener and showing that you care about what the other person has to say.

Here are some tips to get the respect in a relationship that you should get:

1. Give love but never give power

Always remember that love is more powerful than anything else. You can give your partner everything they could ever ask for, but if they don’t show any appreciation for your love then it means that you are giving your power away.

2. Always be mindful to keep a balance

Be generous with love but do not put up with bad behaviour. If you’re constantly putting up with your partner’s bad behaviour, the relationship will deplete you. You need to make sure that you stand up for yourself and your needs and tell them what they need to do differently. This will help you gain their respect.

3. Set boundaries

Both partners must set boundaries within the relationship. For example, if one partner wants to spend all day at work while the other wants to go shopping, this needs to be discussed beforehand. If you know what you want, and can agree on what you want, it will be easier to achieve and set boundaries.

4. Respect yourself so that others can respect you

This is an extremely important tip because it helps you gain respect. Respect yourself first because, without self respect, you may not get respect in a relationship. Self knowledge and radical self acceptance lead to more self respect.

5. Know yourself and your needs

When you know your good side and you know you’re not so good at something, you will understand how others see you. If you know what you want out of life, you’ll find ways to get those things. So, learn to identify your strengths and weaknesses and use these to your advantage. This will help you attract respect in a relationship.

6. Accept your partner, accept yourself

We all come with our flaws and imperfections, and we shouldn’t expect perfection from someone else. We should try to accept ourselves as well as our partners. Create a safe space to talk about your problems, and you should definitely listen to them.

7. Do not be quiet if disrespected

It would help if you never let anyone disrespect you when you’re in a relationship. If you’re treated badly, you should speak up. You should never allow yourself to be belittled, especially if you’re not in the wrong. If you keep quiet, you’re only encouraging this behaviour and losing your respect in the relationship.

8. Seek help from family

You should seek help from family members if things are unmanageable and you know that you’re being disrespected. It doesn’t matter whether you’re married or living together; know that you always have support from your loved ones and you can rely on them in times of need. Talking to them will help you regain confidence and respect in a relationship.

9. Seek professional help

If you’re feeling stressed, you should seek professional help. Many types of professionals are available, including psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, coaches, and therapists. These professionals will be able to guide you through any issues that you have, and they will also be able to give you advice on how to improve your relationships.

The last word

A strong relationship requires choosing to love each other even in those moments when you struggle to like each other. Respect is something that everyone deserves, regardless of gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation. Everyone has unique personalities and needs, and no two people or situations are alike. When you respect yourself, then you will allow a safe space to respect others. So, remember to always treat yourself with love and kindness, and others will treat you just the same.
